The United Nations was created in 1945 to maintain international peace and security, develop friendly relations among nations, promote international cooperation and human rights, and serve as a centre for harmonizing the actions of nations.
The UN was born out of the horrors of the Second World War and the failure of the League of Nations (1920–1946) to prevent it. The name 'United Nations' was first used by US President Franklin D. Roosevelt in the Declaration by United Nations of 1 January 1942.
Despite its weaknesses, the UN remains the only truly universal organization and an indispensable forum for cooperation on peace, development, human rights and global problems such as climate change.
