Taxila (Sirkap, Jaulian, Dharmarajika), Takht-i-Bahi (Mardan), Pushkalavati (Charsadda)
Strategically situated at the crossroads of the Silk Road connecting South Asia, Central Asia, China, and the West, Gandhara flourished across modern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and northern Punjab in Pakistan.
The civilization reached its golden epoch under the Kushan Empire, particularly during the reign of Emperor Kanishka the Great (c. 127–150 CE), who convened the Fourth Buddhist Council and patronized Mahayana Buddhism.
Gandhara was the crucible of 'Greco-Buddhist Art': Greek aesthetic traditions (Apollo-like features, wavy hair, realistic drapery of Roman togas) were fused with Indian Buddhist spirituality, creating the first ever anthropomorphic sculptures of Gautama Buddha.
