Originating in the Cusco highlands of Peru, the Inca called their empire Tawantinsuyu ('The Four United Regions'). Under the visionary Sapa Inca Pachacuti (reigned 1438–1471), it expanded along the spine of the Andes into the largest empire in the Americas.
Remarkably, the Inca built their vast empire without the use of the wheel, draft animals (except llamas for pack loads), iron metallurgy, or written alphabetic script, organizing their economy around centralized state reciprocity and public labor service (mit'a).
They conquered vertiginous mountain altitudes by carving monumental agricultural terraces (andenes) into vertical cliff sides and cultivating over 3,000 varieties of potatoes and maize.
