Highlights mountains; Pakistan is home to K2 (8,611 m), the world's second-highest peak.

About the day

Designated by the UN General Assembly in 2003, after the International Year of Mountains (2002). Mountains supply much of the world's fresh water. Pakistan has five of the world's 14 peaks above 8,000 m, including K2 and Nanga Parbat.
