Where our sense of right and wrong comes from
People learn their values from many sources: religion, family, culture and traditions, education, law, philosophy and reason, role models, and their own conscience.
No one is born with a ready-made set of values. Values are learned and shaped over a lifetime by many influences, which together form a person's moral outlook.
In Islam, the primary sources of ethics are the Quran and the Sunnah (the sayings and practice of the Prophet, PBUH), supplemented by ijma (consensus) and qiyas (analogical reasoning). Islamic ethics stresses intention (niyyah), accountability before Allah, and the balance between rights of Allah (huquq Allah) and rights of people (huquq al-ibad).
Good values grow when all these sources point in the same direction, when what families teach, schools reinforce, religion inspires and leaders practise.
