Ethics is the branch of knowledge that studies what is right and wrong, good and bad in human conduct, and the principles that should guide how people behave towards themselves, others and society.
Every day people make choices that affect others: whether to tell the truth, keep a promise, help someone in need, or take advantage of a situation. Ethics studies the standards by which such choices are judged. For public servants, who hold power over others, ethics is not optional but central to their work.
Ethics is the foundation of personal character and good governance. A society whose people and leaders follow ethical principles enjoys trust, justice and progress.
