The family is the first and most powerful institution for teaching values, because children learn mainly by watching and imitating their parents and elders.
A child's earliest and most lasting lessons about right and wrong come from the family. The home is often called the first school and the mother the first teacher. Values learned in childhood tend to last for life.
Traditionally, the joint family system, with grandparents, uncles and cousins living together, passed values across generations and gave children many role models. Islam places great emphasis on the rights of parents and children, kindness to relatives and good upbringing.
Strong families build strong societies. When the family fails to teach values, no other institution can fully replace it.
