Society shapes values through the community, religious institutions, traditions, the media, peer groups and the example of leaders and public figures.
After the family, the wider society is the most important influence on a person's values. People absorb the norms of their community, follow the example of public figures, and respond to social approval and disapproval.
When political, religious and business leaders act with integrity, society follows; when corruption and injustice go unpunished, people learn that dishonesty pays. Leaders therefore carry a special responsibility for society's values. Figures such as Abdul Sattar Edhi, who lived simply and served humanity without discrimination, show the power of example.
Society is a powerful teacher. A society that rewards honesty and service, and refuses to tolerate injustice, raises citizens of good character.
