Putting the public interest first
Dedication to public service means a deep commitment to serving citizens and the public interest, working hard and with care, and putting duty before personal convenience or gain.
Dedication is the inner motivation to serve. A dedicated public servant sees the job as a responsibility to the people, not merely a source of salary, power or status, and works to make a real difference in citizens' lives. Scholars call this 'public service motivation'.
During the 2022 floods, many deputy commissioners, doctors, Rescue 1122 workers and soldiers worked day and night for weeks to evacuate people and deliver relief, often at personal risk.
Islam regards serving people as worship. The Prophet (PBUH) said that the best of people are those most beneficial to others, and that every one of you is a shepherd and responsible for his flock. Caliph Umar (RA) patrolled Madinah at night to learn people's needs himself.
Dedication gives life to institutions. Laws and plans achieve nothing unless committed public servants carry them out with energy and care.
