Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others: to put yourself in their place and see a situation from their point of view.
Empathy differs from sympathy. Sympathy is feeling sorry for someone; empathy is truly understanding what they are going through. Psychologists describe cognitive empathy (understanding another's thoughts), emotional empathy (sharing their feelings) and compassionate empathy (being moved to help). Empathy is also one of the five components of emotional intelligence.
A tax official dealing with an elderly widow who has missed a deadline takes time to understand her situation and helps her apply for the relief allowed under the rules, instead of simply imposing a penalty.
The Prophet (PBUH) said: 'The believers, in their mutual kindness, compassion and sympathy, are like one body: when one part aches, the whole body responds with sleeplessness and fever' (Bukhari and Muslim).
Empathy humanizes administration. It reminds public servants that behind every file is a human being with hopes, fears and needs.
