Human rights are the basic rights and freedoms every person has, regardless of nationality, sex, religion, language or any other status.
Adopted by the UN General Assembly on 10 December 1948, the UDHR's 30 articles include the right to life, liberty, equality before the law, freedom of thought and religion, education, work and an adequate standard of living. Pakistan voted in favour.
The UDHR led to binding treaties such as the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (1966), the Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) and CEDAW (1979), most of which Pakistan has ratified.
Articles 8 to 28 of the 1973 Constitution guarantee fundamental rights, such as equality, freedom of speech, religion and movement, and the right to education, which courts can enforce.
