The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
Seventeen goals agreed by all UN member states in September 2015 to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure peace and prosperity for everyone by 2030.
The SDGs replaced the eight Millennium Development Goals, which had focused mainly on poverty, health and education in developing countries. The SDGs are broader and apply to every country, rich or poor.
The goals are linked: ending poverty depends on education, health, jobs and a healthy environment. Their central promise is to 'leave no one behind'.
In February 2016 Pakistan's National Assembly passed a resolution adopting the SDGs as the national development agenda, one of the first parliaments to do so. Progress is tracked through national SDG units and reports.
