The leading modern Sindhi poet; translated Shah Jo Risalo into Urdu
Mubarak Ali Shaikh, who wrote as Shaikh Ayaz, was born in Shikarpur and trained as a lawyer in Karachi. He began writing poetry young, first in Urdu and then mainly in Sindhi.
His progressive, often political poetry brought him into conflict with authorities, and he was jailed for his writing. He served as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sindh in the late 1970s.
He was buried at Bhit Shah, near the shrine of Shah Abdul Latif, whose work he loved and translated.
Freedom, resistance to oppression, love of Sindh, human dignity, and romantic love, in both traditional and modern forms.
Shaikh Ayaz is widely regarded as the greatest Sindhi poet after Shah Latif, and his work transformed modern Sindhi literature.
