A climbing plant with small, white, star-shaped and sweet-smelling flowers, grown in gardens across Pakistan.
Jasmine is a shrub or vine with dark green leaves and clusters of white flowers. Its strong, sweet fragrance is strongest in the evening.
Strings and garlands of jasmine (gajray) are worn by women, especially at weddings and Eid, and are sold on street corners in cities like Karachi and Lahore. The flowers are also used to make perfume and attar.
Its white colour stands for purity and peace, and its fragrance and place in everyday celebrations made it a natural symbol of Pakistani culture.
