A sturdy wild goat with long, backward-curving ridged horns, living on cliffs in the Karakoram and Hindu Kush.

About the animal

Ibex are expert climbers on steep cliffs and are an important prey of the snow leopard. Males fight by clashing their horns during the breeding season.

Community conservation

As with the markhor, communities in Gilgit-Baltistan protect ibex and earn income from limited, regulated trophy hunting, which is used for local schools, health and development.
