A huge wild sheep with enormous spiralling horns, found in Pakistan only on the high border with China.
Marco Polo sheep are a form of argali. Males carry the longest horns of any sheep, curling in wide spirals. They live in open, high-altitude grasslands above about 4,000 metres.
In Pakistan they are seen mainly in the Khunjerab area, moving across the border with China and Tajikistan with the seasons. Khunjerab National Park was established partly to protect them.
Hunting, competition with domestic livestock for grazing, and disturbance along the border are their main threats.
