The electroweak theory, which unifies the weak nuclear force and the electromagnetic force
Shared with: Sheldon Glashow, Steven Weinberg
Nature has four basic forces. Salam, Glashow and Weinberg showed that two of them, electromagnetism and the weak force (which causes radioactive decay), are two faces of a single 'electroweak' force at very high energies. The theory predicted the W and Z particles, found at CERN in 1983, and is part of the Standard Model of physics.
Theoretical physicist born in Santokdas near Sahiwal and raised in Jhang; studied at Government College Lahore and Cambridge, and was science adviser to the Government of Pakistan.
