An experimental approach to reducing global poverty
Shared with: Esther Duflo, Michael Kremer
Instead of grand theories, the three economists broke poverty into smaller questions, such as how to improve school attendance or child vaccination, and tested the answers with randomized controlled trials in the field, as in medicine. Their methods now shape aid programmes worldwide; Banerjee and Duflo explain them in Poor Economics (2011).
Economist born in Mumbai and raised in Kolkata; professor at MIT and co-founder of the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL).
