Research into the nature of the chemical bond
Pauling used quantum mechanics to explain how atoms bond into molecules, introduced the idea of electronegativity and described the alpha-helix in proteins. His book The Nature of the Chemical Bond (1939) became a classic. His second Nobel (Peace, 1962) was for campaigning against nuclear tests.
American chemist who later campaigned against nuclear weapons tests and won the 1962 Peace Prize.
