The story behind the prize

Mohammadi has campaigned against the death penalty, solitary confinement and compulsory hijab laws in Iran. She has been arrested 13 times and sentenced to many years in prison. The prize followed the 2022 'Woman, Life, Freedom' protests after Mahsa Amini died in police custody.
