Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW)

Awarded for

Extensive efforts to eliminate chemical weapons

The story behind the prize

The OPCW checks that member states destroy their chemical weapons and do not make new ones. After a 2013 sarin attack near Damascus, it helped remove and destroy Syria's declared chemical weapons. By 2023 all chemical weapons stockpiles declared by its members had been verified as destroyed.
