The story behind the prize

Ressa's Rappler exposed killings in President Duterte's 'war on drugs' in the Philippines and faced many lawsuits. Muratov's Novaya Gazeta reported on corruption and the war in Chechnya; six of its journalists were killed, including Anna Politkovskaya. After Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, the paper suspended publication.
