Theoretical studies of the structure and evolution of stars
Shared with: William A. Fowler
On a sea voyage to England in 1930, aged 19, Chandrasekhar calculated that a white dwarf star heavier than about 1.4 Suns cannot support itself and must collapse further. This explains why some stars end as neutron stars or black holes. He shared the prize with William Fowler, who studied how chemical elements form inside stars.
Astrophysicist born in Lahore (then British India) who spent most of his career at the University of Chicago; nephew of C. V. Raman.
