Arafat co-founded Fatah and led the PLO's armed and political struggle for a Palestinian state. In the Oslo process the PLO recognized Israel's right to exist and Israel recognized the PLO. He returned to Gaza in 1994 and was elected president of the Palestinian Authority in 1996.
