Group of Twenty (G20)

Purpose

Coordinate international economic and financial policy among the world's major economies, representing roughly 85% of global GDP.

Members:

19 countries, plus the European Union and African Union

Headquarters:

No permanent headquarters (rotating annual presidency)

History

The G20 was created in 1999 as a forum for finance ministers and central bank governors following the Asian financial crisis, and was elevated to regular leaders' summits in 2008 in response to the global financial crisis.

Structure

• Annual Leaders' Summit, hosted by the rotating presidency
• Supporting ministerial and working-group tracks throughout the year

Key facts

• The African Union was admitted as a permanent member in 2023, alongside the existing European Union membership
• India hosted the G20 presidency in 2023

Pakistan's relationship

Not a member; has periodically expressed interest in joining given its large population and economy.
