Al-Madina al-Fadila (the Virtuous City), synthesis of Greek and Islamic philosophy
Al-Farabi worked to show that Greek philosophy, especially Aristotle and Plato, and Islamic revelation point to the same truth, arguing both philosophy and prophecy are routes to the same rational order underlying the universe. In his political thought, modelled on Plato's Republic, he envisioned an ideal "virtuous city" ruled by a philosopher-prophet whose intellect is perfected enough to grasp truth directly and guide others toward happiness.
Central Asian scholar who studied and taught in Baghdad, mastering Greek philosophy, logic and music theory; revered in the Islamic tradition as "the Second Teacher" after Aristotle.
