Postmodernism, The Postmodern Condition
Lyotard argued that the postmodern condition is defined by a loss of faith in the grand, unifying "metanarratives" — like the march of Progress, Reason, or History toward liberation — that modern societies once used to justify and organize knowledge. In their place he saw only competing, local, provisional "small narratives", with no single standard left to judge between them.
French philosopher and sociologist whose 1979 report on knowledge in computerized societies became one of the founding texts of postmodern theory.
