22 April 1760 – 28 September 1837
20th Mughal Emperor (1806–1837)
In office: 19 November 1806 – 28 September 1837
Akbar Shah II succeeded his father Shah Alam II in 1806 to a throne that was by then entirely dependent on the British East India Company, which paid him a pension and controlled Delhi and its surrounding territory in all but name, leaving him only ceremonial authority within the Red Fort.
Akbar Shah II's reign illustrates the almost complete hollowing-out of Mughal sovereignty by the early 19th century, with the emperor reduced to a ceremonial figure confined to the Red Fort under East India Company control.
Died of natural causes in Delhi in 1837; succeeded by his son Bahadur Shah II, the last Mughal emperor.
