2nd Sultan of Delhi, Khalji Dynasty (1296–1316)
In office: 1296 – 1316
Alauddin Khalji seized the Delhi throne by assassinating his uncle and father-in-law, Sultan Jalaluddin Khalji, the dynasty's founder, and went on to become one of the most powerful and feared rulers in the Delhi Sultanate's history, expanding its territory further south than any predecessor.
Alauddin Khalji is remembered as one of the most militarily successful and administratively assertive of the Delhi Sultans, whose market reforms and Mongol defences are still studied as early examples of centralized economic control and effective frontier defence.
Died in 1316 after a period of declining health, amid court intrigue around the succession; the Khalji dynasty itself collapsed within a few years amid internal power struggles.
