2nd President of Pakistan (1958–1969)
In office: 1958 – 1969
Field Marshal Ayub Khan was Pakistan's first native Commander-in-Chief of the Army before he was appointed Chief Martial Law Administrator by President Iskander Mirza in 1958, a position from which he quickly displaced Mirza himself to become president.
Ayub Khan is remembered both for a period of relatively strong economic growth and infrastructure development and for cementing military rule as a recurring feature of Pakistani politics; the 1965 war and his handling of the Tashkent Declaration badly damaged his domestic standing.
Resigned under pressure from nationwide protests in March 1969, handing power not to a civilian successor but to army chief General Yahya Khan, rather than following the constitutional line of succession; died in 1974.
