Founder & 1st Sultan, Lodi Dynasty (1451–1489)
In office: 1451 – 1489
Bahlul Lodi was an Afghan Pashtun noble and governor of Sirhind under the weak, declining Sayyid dynasty, whose nobles invited him to take the Delhi throne in 1451, founding the Lodi dynasty, the last and the first ethnically Afghan ruling house of the Delhi Sultanate.
Bahlul Lodi is credited with rebuilding the Delhi Sultanate from its lowest point after the devastation of Timur's invasion and the weak Sayyid dynasty, restoring it as a significant regional power, even though it would never again reach its earlier Khalji- or Tughlaq-era extent.
Died of natural causes in 1489; succeeded by his son Sikandar Lodi.
