Coined the name "Pakistan"
Chaudhry Rahmat Ali was a Cambridge-educated Muslim nationalist who, while living in England, became convinced that Muslims of British India needed a wholly separate state rather than any form of shared constitutional arrangement with Hindu-majority India.
Rahmat Ali is remembered specifically and almost exclusively as the man who coined the name "Pakistan", even though the political movement that actually achieved independence was led by Jinnah and the Muslim League rather than by Rahmat Ali himself.
Returned to Pakistan briefly after independence but found himself without political standing; went back to England, where he died in poverty in Cambridge in 1951.
