5th President of Pakistan (1973–1978)
In office: 1973 – 1978
Fazal Ilahi Chaudhry was a veteran Pakistan Peoples Party politician and former Speaker of the National Assembly who became a largely ceremonial President when the 1973 Constitution shifted executive power to the Prime Minister, a post then held by Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.
Chaudhry is remembered as a largely ceremonial head of state whose tenure illustrates how far real executive power had shifted to the Prime Minister's office under the 1973 Constitution, until a military coup upended that arrangement.
Resigned in 1978 under the martial law government of Zia-ul-Haq; died in 1982.
