3rd Sultan, Tughlaq Dynasty (1351–1388)
In office: 1351 – 1388
Firoz Shah Tughlaq succeeded his cousin Muhammad bin Tughluq in 1351 at a moment of exhaustion after decades of warfare and administrative upheaval, and deliberately pursued a far gentler, more conciliatory style of rule focused on public works and reduced taxation rather than further conquest.
Firoz Shah Tughlaq is remembered as a builder and reformer whose public-works legacy (canals, cities) outlasted his dynasty, even though the stability he achieved did not survive long after his death, as the Sultanate fragmented rapidly under his weak successors and was further devastated by Timur's invasion in 1398.
Died of old age in 1388 after a 37-year reign; his successors proved unable to hold the Sultanate together, and it fractured into warring factions within a decade, further shattered by Timur's sack of Delhi in 1398.
