9th Sultan of Delhi, Mamluk Dynasty (1266–1287)
In office: 1266 – 1287
Ghiyasuddin Balban, another former Turkic slave who rose through the ranks of the Delhi nobility, effectively ran the Sultanate as regent and chief minister for years before formally taking the throne himself in 1266, by which point central authority had badly eroded.
Balban is remembered as the Mamluk dynasty's strongest ruler after Iltutmish, credited with restoring centralized royal authority at a moment when the Sultanate might otherwise have disintegrated.
Died of natural causes in Delhi in 1287, grief-stricken after the death of his favoured son and heir Muhammad Khan in a Mongol raid; the dynasty declined rapidly under his weaker successors and was overthrown within a decade.
