7th President of Pakistan (1988–1993)
In office: 1988 – 1993
Ghulam Ishaq Khan was a senior career civil servant and former Finance Minister under Zia-ul-Haq who, as Chairman of the Senate, became acting President after Zia's death and was then elected President in his own right.
Ghulam Ishaq Khan's presidency showed how the Eighth Amendment's presidential powers continued to destabilize elected governments even after the return to civilian rule, repeatedly cutting short prime ministerial terms before Nawaz Sharif's government successfully challenged a dismissal in court.
Resigned in 1993 as part of a negotiated settlement that also removed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif from office, ending the political deadlock between them; died in 2006.
