3rd Governor-General of Pakistan (1951–1955)
In office: 1951 – 1955
Ghulam Muhammad was a career civil servant and former Finance Minister who became Governor-General after Nazimuddin, and used the office far more assertively than his predecessors, setting an early precedent for executive overreach against elected governments.
Ghulam Muhammad's dismissal of an elected Prime Minister and dissolution of the Constituent Assembly are seen by historians as early, consequential precedents for the pattern of unelected executive and military interference that recurred throughout Pakistan's constitutional history.
Resigned in 1955 due to ill health and died the following year in 1956; succeeded by Iskander Mirza.
