5th Prime Minister of Pakistan (1956–1957)
In office: 1956 – 1957
Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy was a veteran Bengali politician who had been the last Premier of undivided Bengal before Partition, and became Pakistan's first Prime Minister from East Pakistan and the first not drawn from the Muslim League, leading a coalition government under the Awami League.
Suhrawardy's brief premiership is remembered for his long-standing advocacy of East Pakistani political rights, a cause that would grow into the much larger crisis of the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Resigned in October 1957 after losing coalition support; later arrested under Ayub Khan's martial law government and died in Beirut in 1963 while seeking medical treatment.
