3rd Sultan of Delhi, Mamluk Dynasty (1211–1236)
In office: 1211 – 1236
Shams-ud-din Iltutmish, Qutb-ud-din Aibak's son-in-law and a former slave-general himself, seized the throne of Delhi from the short-lived Aram Shah in 1211 and is generally regarded as the true consolidator of the Delhi Sultanate as a stable, independent state.
Iltutmish is credited with transforming the Delhi Sultanate from a loose military conquest into a stable, legitimate and administratively organized state, laying institutional foundations that lasted long after the Mamluk dynasty itself ended.
Died of natural causes in Delhi in 1236; after a brief, unstable reign by his son Rukn-ud-din Firuz, the throne passed to his daughter, Razia Sultana.
