4th and last Governor-General (1955–1956); 1st President of Pakistan (1956–1958)
In office: 1955 – 1958
Iskander Mirza, a former army officer and the first native Indian/Pakistani graduate of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, became Pakistan's last Governor-General and then its first President when the 1956 Constitution converted the country into an Islamic Republic.
Mirza is remembered as the president who first imposed martial law in Pakistan, a decision that backfired on him personally and set a precedent of military intervention that would shape Pakistani politics for decades.
Overthrown and exiled by his own appointee, General Ayub Khan, just weeks after declaring martial law in 1958; spent the rest of his life in exile in Britain, where he died in 1969.
