2nd Governor-General of Pakistan (1948–1951); later 2nd Prime Minister (1951–1953)
In office: 1948 – 1951
Khawaja Nazimuddin, a Bengali aristocrat and former Chief Minister/Premier of Bengal, succeeded Jinnah as Governor-General immediately after his death, and later moved to the more politically powerful post of Prime Minister when the Constituent Assembly amended the constitutional balance of power.
Nazimuddin is remembered as a transitional, consensus-building figure in Pakistan's earliest and most unstable years, though his premiership was ultimately cut short by Governor-General Ghulam Muhammad, foreshadowing the civil-military tensions that would recur throughout Pakistan's history.
As Governor-General, left office in 1951 to become Prime Minister; as Prime Minister, was dismissed by Governor-General Ghulam Muhammad in 1953 despite retaining a parliamentary majority, and later died in Dhaka in 1964.
