Sultan of the Ghaznavid Empire (998–1030); led 17 invasions of India
In office: 998 – 1030
Mahmud of Ghazni inherited the Ghaznavid Empire, centred on present-day Afghanistan, from his father Sabuktigin, and used it as a base to launch repeated military campaigns into northern India, bringing Punjab permanently under Ghaznavid control and opening the route for later Muslim rule in the subcontinent.
Mahmud of Ghazni is remembered in South Asian history as the first major Muslim conqueror to establish lasting political control over part of the subcontinent (Punjab), setting the stage for the Ghurid and Delhi Sultanate rule that followed; he is viewed very differently in different historiographical traditions, celebrated by some as a champion of Islam and criticized by others for the destruction his raids caused.
Died of natural causes in Ghazni in 1030, after which the Ghaznavid Empire gradually weakened and eventually gave way to the rising Ghurids.
