Biography

Muhammad Khan Junejo was a relatively low-profile Sindhi Muslim League politician whom President Zia-ul-Haq selected as Prime Minister after the 1985 non-party elections, intending him to be a loyal, pliant civilian face for continued military-dominated rule.

Achievements

• Restored a nominally civilian, elected government after eight years of direct martial law under Zia
• Negotiated the Geneva Accords (1988) on the withdrawal of Soviet forces from Afghanistan
• Took early, cautious steps toward reasserting parliamentary authority over military and intelligence matters

Key events

• Appointed Prime Minister following the 1985 non-party general election held under Zia's martial law government
• Increasingly asserted independence from Zia, including over the 1988 Ojhri Camp ammunition depot disaster and its handling
• Dismissed by President Zia-ul-Haq in May 1988, who also dissolved the National Assembly

Legacy

Junejo is remembered for the first real, if partial, civilian pushback against Zia's continued dominance, a friction that led directly to his own dismissal only months before Zia's death.

How it ended

Dismissed by President Zia-ul-Haq in May 1988; died in 1993.
