Founder of the Delhi Sultanate; 1st Sultan, Mamluk (Slave) Dynasty (1206–1210)
In office: 1206 – 1210
Qutb-ud-din Aibak rose from enslavement as a boy in Central Asia to become one of Muhammad of Ghor's most trusted generals in India, and declared himself an independent Sultan at Lahore after Ghor's assassination in 1206, founding what became the Delhi Sultanate and its first ruling line, the Mamluk or "Slave" dynasty.
Qutb-ud-din Aibak is remembered as the founder of the Delhi Sultanate, the institution that would rule most of the Indian subcontinent, in various dynastic forms, for the next 320 years until Babur's conquest in 1526.
Died in 1210 in a riding accident while playing chowgan (polo) in Lahore; briefly succeeded by his inexperienced son Aram Shah before power passed to his son-in-law and ablest general, Iltutmish.
