4th Ruler of Delhi, Mamluk Dynasty (1236–1240); only female Sultan of Delhi
In office: 1236 – 1240
Razia Sultana was the daughter of Iltutmish, who is said to have personally judged her more capable than his sons and nominated her as his successor; she became the first and, to date, only woman to rule the Delhi Sultanate, governing in her own right rather than as a regent.
Razia Sultana's brief but notable reign is remembered as a unique instance of female sovereignty in medieval Islamic South Asia, and she remains a frequently cited figure in discussions of women's historical role in Muslim political leadership.
Deposed in 1240 by rebelling nobles; killed in 1240, reportedly while fleeing after her attempt to retake the throne failed, near Kaithal.
