19th Mughal Emperor (1760–1788, 1788–1806)
In office: 10 October 1760 – 19 November 1806
Shah Alam II succeeded to a throne that had become almost entirely symbolic, and spent much of his long reign as a pensioner and political pawn of whichever regional power — the Afghans, the Marathas, or eventually the British East India Company — held the most influence over Delhi at any given moment.
Shah Alam II's nearly 46-year reign, one of the longest of any Mughal emperor, is remembered as the period in which the empire's authority finally dissolved into nominal, symbolic kingship, first under Maratha and then under British protection, with the emperor himself blinded and reduced to a ceremonial figure.
Died of natural causes in Delhi in November 1806, as a pensioner under British East India Company protection.
