6th President of Pakistan (1978–1988)
In office: 1978 – 1988
General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq, appointed Army Chief by Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto himself in 1976, overthrew Bhutto's government in a bloodless coup the following year and went on to rule Pakistan under martial law for over a decade, reshaping its legal and political character.
Zia's decade in power left a lasting imprint on Pakistan's legal system, religious politics and role in regional geopolitics (including the Afghan war), and remains one of the most consequential and contested periods in the country's history.
Died in a plane crash of still-disputed cause near Bahawalpur on 17 August 1988; succeeded, per constitutional procedure, by Senate Chairman Ghulam Ishaq Khan as acting President pending elections.
