4th President (1971–1973); 9th Prime Minister of Pakistan (1973–1977)
In office: 1971 – 1977
Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, a wealthy Sindhi landowner and former Foreign Minister under Ayub Khan, founded the Pakistan Peoples Party in 1967 on a platform of "Islamic socialism", led it to victory in West Pakistan in the 1970 election, and took power after the loss of East Pakistan, first as President and then, under his own 1973 Constitution, as a powerful executive Prime Minister.
Bhutto remains one of Pakistan's most consequential and polarizing leaders: credited with the 1973 Constitution, the nuclear programme's foundations and populist economic reforms, but also blamed for authoritarian tendencies and the political crisis that invited Zia's coup; his execution later made him a lasting symbol for his party and family.
Arrested after Zia's coup, convicted of conspiracy to murder a political opponent in a trial widely criticized internationally as unfair, and executed by hanging in Rawalpindi on 4 April 1979.
