Pakistani theoretical physicist born in Santokdas near Sahiwal and raised in Jhang; science adviser to the Government of Pakistan.

Contributions

• Shared the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physics with Sheldon Glashow and Steven Weinberg for unifying the weak and electromagnetic forces
• Founded the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy (1964)
• Helped set up SUPARCO and the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission's early research
