Scientists found that CFCs from fridges and aerosol sprays were destroying the ozone layer, creating the 'ozone hole' over Antarctica. The protocol phased out CFCs and later HCFCs; the 2016 Kigali Amendment added HFCs. The ozone layer is expected to recover by around the middle of the century.
